Since they were domesticated thousands of years ago, these four-legged companions have gained increasing recognition and become important members of the family. There are over 210 million dogs living in the world today, and around 85% of them are pets.

Does the 1:7 aspect ratio work?

The most common form used by most people is the proportion of 1:7, that is, 1 year of an animal's life is equivalent to 7 years of human life. However, there is no accuracy in calculating age based on this premise, as this is just a simplistic calculation.

It's a fact that dogs live fewer years than humans and therefore age faster. A dog reaches adulthood in just 1 year, while a 7-year-old human being is still just a child.

Accelerated growth in the first years of life

The non-linear development and accelerated rate of growth in the early years of a dog's life make the study of its age difficult compared to that of humans. Many scholars believe that the rate of aging in dogs does not remain constant throughout their lives. In particular, the theory is that it would be much faster in the first two years, with the first year of life averaging 15 human years and the second year of life 24.

Calculate the approximate age of your dog based on its physical size

  • Small-sized dog (up to 9 kg): Multiply the first two years by 12.5 (total of 25 years), and from the 3rd year on, add 4.5 years to each year of life;
  • Medium-sized dog (10 to 12 kg): Multiply the first two years by 10.5 (21 years) and then add 5-7 years for each year of life;
  • Large dogs (over 12 kg): Multiply the first two years by 9 (18 years) and add 7-9 years for each year of life.
