Several families may be evicted in Brazil starting this month

During the pandemic, with the aim of not aggravating the situation, which was already a public calamity, the Minister Luís Roberto Barroso suspended repossession processes for regions that had been occupied before March 20, 2020.

The suspension was valid until August of that year, and at that moment it ended up being extended until the end of October (31). However, as of that date, the minister revoked the decision, thus releasing reintegrations and evictions.

With this decision, it is expected that at least 188 thousand families will be forced to leave their homes. The measure also includes the provision of shelters, assistance and inclusion in housing programs for the homeless.

Lack of option generates hyperperiphery

Between March 2020 and the last month of September, even with the ban in effect, approximately 35,200 families were evicted. As a result, the number of hyperperipheries increased.

In these occupations, precarious wooden houses – known as shacks – proliferated in places that do not have the minimum infrastructure to support population growth.

São Paulo neighborhoods such as Campo Limpo and Grajaú, in the most remote parts of the city, became the scene of these occupations. As a result, there was a 136% increase in illegal occupations.

The number of affected may be higher

According to the Zero Eviction campaign, which monitors collective evictions, evictions carried out in a individual are not compiled, so it is evident that the number of people affected may be greater than the I estimated.

With the reduction of the budget allocated to housing programs, the current president caused a 95% decrease in the resources allocated to this purpose.

The consequences of this may be worse for the poorest sections of this group, causing a major housing challenge. The feeling, as USP architect and urban planner Felipe de Freitas Moreira says, is “as if there were no longer a national program capable of serving families in a state of vulnerability”.
