2006 World Cup

The 2006 World Cup took place in Germany and was championed by the Italian team. The choice of Germany as the host country for the event was at the expense of South Africa (which later hosted the 2010 edition of the championship), Morocco, Brazil and Angola.

The participating teams, already subdivided into groups, were:

They went on to the next stage of the tournament: Germany, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, Spain, France, Ghana, Netherlands, England, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine. Thus, the games that marked the round of 16 were:

- Germany x Sweden (Germany won 2x0);
- Argentina x Mexico (Argentina won 2-1);
- Italy x Australia (Italy won 1x 0);


- Switzerland x Ukraine (0-0, Ukraine won on penalties);
- England x Ecuador (England won by 1x0);
- Portugal x Netherlands (Portugal won by 1x0);
- Brazil vs Ghana (Brazil won 3x0);
- Spain x France (France won 3x1).

The quarterfinals were composed of the following matches:

- Germany x Argentina. The match drew 1-1 and ended with Germany's victory over Argentina on penalties (4x2);
- Italy x Ukraine. Italy beat Ukraine 3-0, within regular game time;
- England x Portugal. Another match with a tie in regular time, in this case it ended in 0-0. The penalty shootout yielded victory for Portugal (3x1);
- Brazil x France. France eliminated Brazil from the competition, with a score of 1x0, achieved within regulation time.

Semifinals:

- The game between Germany x Italy, eliminated Germany in overtime by 2-0;
- France eliminated Portugal by 1x0, within 90 minutes of the game.

Soon, the final match of the 2006 World Cup took place between Italy and France, ending in regular game time with a 1-1 draw. Italy's victory came in the penalty shootout: 5x3. The dispute for third place, between Germany and Portugal, had Germany as the 3-1 winner.
