When is therapy necessary?

It is advisable to see a therapist when you realize that your child has problems that he cannot deal with on his own. Or, when these problems start to affect their attitudes, performance in daily activities or how they feel about the world and other people.

How does the therapy work?

Children learn best through experience. This means that they are more likely to be involved in playful activities, such as drawing and playing, when they are very young. The family's participation is fundamental for the child to feel understood, valued, accepted and worthy, which increases the chances of the child presenting pro-social behaviors.

With older children and adolescents, the approach is mainly based on exchanging ideas and counseling, focusing on learning skills to achieve a higher level of emotional regulation and behavioral. Some examples of these skills are: breathing techniques, sounds of nature, laughter and sensory stimulation.

How can you help?

  • First, find a good therapist, someone who makes you and your child feel comfortable. Seeking indications from other health professionals you trust can be of great help;
  • Take it to all appointments. It is important to remember that change takes time and that it takes several sessions to learn and put those learnings into practice;
  • Take questions with the therapist, as it is not just the child/adolescent who needs counseling. Ask about how to act when there are problems at home and how to help too;
  • Patience and love are the key. Use kind words, even when you need to correct your child. Don't forget to praise him when he's doing well or trying hard.
