Same words but different meanings
Knowing the similarities in several words with regard to the Portuguese and Spanish languages, many speakers of the two languages manage to converse with some ease. However, there is a small problem, there are words that, even though they are the same, have different meanings.
Here are some words that are the same but have different meanings:
- Earring
For us Brazilians, the word “earring” refers to an accessory that is worn in the ears. However, for Spaniards, the word refers to a joke. The word play means to jump.
- boutique
In Brazil, botequim is synonymous with boteco, that is, a popular street bar for casual encounters. In Spain, it is a subatomic which means a doctor's bag.
- Glue
For us Brazilians, glue means a product for sticking things together. But it can also be an expression for answers copied into a test. The Spaniards already know it as a line of people or an animal's tail.
- Cup
In Brazil it means a part attached to the kitchen and it is where meals are made. Also, it can refer to the shade of a tree or a tournament trophy. In Spain, it means glass. More specifically, the wine glasses.
- child
Even though the pronunciation is the same as the term child in Portuguese, in Spanish it means the creation of something or a person's family education.
- Puppy
For us, dog refers to an animal that is normally a domestic pet. As for the Spaniards, it is a way of talking about the puppies, be they of any kind.
