In 1979, the Federal Revenue, a Federal Government agency linked to the Ministry of Finance, decided to start an advertising campaign with the aim of increasing tax collection.

Thus, at the time, it hired the advertising agency DPZ to be responsible for creating the campaign that would publicize the deadlines for filing income tax returns.

As in every advertising campaign there is a logo, for the Income Tax it was established that the brand would be a Lion, to be designed by José Zaragoza, publicist.

Only a year later, in 1980, the Income Tax campaign with the Lion as a symbol was aired. Broadcast on television in the same year, the Lion appears with roars, translated by the journalist, who states:

“The forms are already being handed in, start collecting your receipts, doing your accounts [...] The lion is meek and fair for those who do everything right.”

The video is available at YouTube, on the Federal Revenue channel.

So, why did the IRS choose the Lion as a symbol?

Now that you've watched the video and understood the reason for launching an advertising campaign, it's time to find out why the Income Tax symbol is a lion.

The answer is quite simple: The Treasury understood that the Leão has fair characteristics and similar to the functioning of the Income Tax declaration.

For the Revenue, the lion is an extremely fair, tame animal that, being the king of the forest, does not attack without first giving a signal.

In this way, as the Revenue states to the population the deadline for declaration of the IR and what are the consequences of not declaring and/or hiding information, the Lion is a great animal to be on the cover of the campaign advertising.

After 40 years, Leão is still in the minds of many Brazilians and even in famous dictionaries, such as Aurélio and Houaiss, to express the relationship between the figure of the king of the forest and the Tax Income.
