Successful treatment in mice brings hope to the scientific community
Across the study, synthetic compounds that target the retina appear to hold great promise for those with mutations involving rod photoreceptors. For a better understanding, the rods are the photoreceptors at the back of the eye that detect dim light and thus vision is possible.
So the researchers administered a synthetic retinoid for seven days to adult rodents born with this retinal degeneration. Through this, the treatment was successful in partially restoring the animals' light sensitivity and their typical light orientation behaviors for 27 days.
An incredible 9 days after treatment, many more neurons in the visual cortex were being stimulated by the optic nerve. In this way, the central visual pathway, which carries information from the eye to the visual cortex, can be significantly restored by treatment with retinoids, even in mice already adults.
Is there hope for the case in humans?
Although the study was carried out only in mice, the discovery made neuroscientists involved think that the hope for the human visual system may also be greater than if imagined.
In addition, it brings a light at the end of the tunnel for adults, since for most diseases the chances of recovering in childhood are greater than when the body gets older. But for this next step, more studies and tests need to be done and validated.
