Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen

Norwegian explorer born in Borge, the first to conquer the glaciers of Antarctica, conquering the South Pole. He became the first person to reach the South Pole (1911). The son of a shipowner, he abandoned his medical studies to embark for the first time (1893). He was part of the Belgian expedition to the Antarctic Circle (1897) and with a boat he owned, the Gjöa, and a crew of six men, crossed the icy seas. from the north of the American continent, from Baffin Bay to the Bering Strait, while carrying out studies on the displacement of the magnetic pole (1903-1906).
He set out to conquer the pole (1909) and, starting from a base camp located on the edges of the peninsula of Edward VII, reached the South Pole, along with four companions (12/14/1911), just 34 days before Robert Falcon's expedition Scott. He continued his explorations, and among other feats he flew over the North Pole, from Spitsbergen, today Svalbard, north of Norway, to Alaska, aboard the airship Norge (1926) with the American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth and the Italian aeronautical engineer Umberto Nobile. Two years later (1928), when trying to rescue friend and companion Umberto Nobile from an accident, the plane he was traveling in, the Latham, disappeared into the icy waters of the Arctic.
