Free checked baggage can make the ticket more expensive

In 2016, during the government of Michel Temer, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) approved that airlines charge a fee for checking luggage. The aim was to make tickets cheaper. With this, passengers could only dispatch hand luggage of up to 10 kg free of charge.

However, a provisional measure was approved for free dispatches for bags of up to 23 kg to return, and this has generated insecurities among passengers who think that this could make ticket prices go up.

Trend of changes in the value of airline tickets with the new measure

Even though it was the initial intention of the government to withdraw the free shipping of bags for to lower the cost of tickets, in the long term, the measure had no positive influence on consumers. The cost of flights not only was not discounted, but also became more expensive over time. According to surveys, air travel increased by up to 45% last March.

The trend is for air ticket prices to rise. This is because, as of 2018, several external factors had a negative impact on inputs important for the maintenance of aircraft and airports, such as the increase in fuel prices and the high of the dollar. For this reason, the dispatch of luggage cannot support the complexity of setting up ticket prices.

Can airfare get more expensive?

Due to these external factors, several airlines were not satisfied with the provisional measure suggested to once again grant free check-in for baggage up to 23 kg. In addition, there are indications that the value of tickets may rise to meet the high cost of necessary inputs.

Since this process started with a provisional measure, it is still necessary to have the approval of the National Congress so that it begins to be valid for life, in addition to the veto or sanction of the president.
