Roger Charles Louis Guillemin

French physiologist born in Dijon, naturalized American (1965), researcher of peptide hormones. Moving to the USA (1953), he became a professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston (1953-1970) and at the Salk Institute and University of California, San Diego (1970-...). He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1977) together with Andrew V. Schally, of the Veterans Administration Hospital, New Orleans, LA, for studies of peptide hormones.

The American Rosaly Sussman Yallow from Veterans Administration Hospital, Bronx, NY was also awarded. Graduated in medicine from the University of Lyon (1949), where he aroused his interest in endocrinology and completed his studies at the University of Montreal, where he received his Ph. D (1953). He worked at the Department of Physiology at the Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston (1953-1970), focusing his studies on hormonal control of pituitary gland, in particular hormones produced by the hypothalamus, and neurotransmitters such as endorphins, research that would earn him the Nobel (1977).

Moving to the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1970), he founded the Laboratories for Neuroendocrinology. He later moved to the Whittier Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology, also in La Jolla (1989) and became adjunct professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego. His studies have led to the isolation of a wide variety of hormones, including somatocrinin or growth hormone factor, and somatostatin, essential for understanding diabetes, and several other hormones that regulate sexual development feminine.

He is a member of many organizations such as the US National Academy of Sciences and the French Académie des Sciences. He is also busy writing books on the history of medicine, researching pre-Columbian art, and using the computer to create paintings that have been well received in North American, Mexican, and Italians.
