Paying a fine on the card is allowed
According to the National Traffic Council (Contran), it is indeed possible to use your credit card to pay fines. Also, this payment on the card can be made in cash or in installments where, generally, a certain interest rate enters, as is common for those who use this type of payment resource.
This is what Resolution No. 918/2022 defines, however, the driver should be aware, as the rule does not define that payment via credit card is mandatory. Thus, the acceptance of this type of discharge of debts will depend exclusively on the body responsible for applying the fine.
Furthermore, the option to use the credit card will not be available if the fine receives an active debt application, or if it is applied in a place other than where the vehicle is licensed. In these cases, the driver will have to accept the payment method, or else try to appeal in court.
How to pay a fine with a credit card?
Anyone wishing to pay by credit card should, first of all, seek to find out if there is indeed the possibility, within the responsible body, of this type of payment. For example, if the fine is imposed by the DETRAN, just go to the website of the Department of the state where you live and check if cards are accepted.
Currently, largely due to the need to help drivers pay these debts, most state sections allow the use of credit cards. If the modality is available in your state, you will have to go to the DETRAN building to pass the card and choose the amount of installments that best fits your reality.
