Colors of the planets of the Solar System
The colors of each planet can indicate, for example, which predominant materials compose it, the amount of water that exists in it, the temperature and the presence of active volcanoes and the gases of its atmosphere. With that in mind, see below which are the colors that predominate in the planets below and the reasons for this:
Mercury
Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, which is at the center of the planet's ellipse. It is also the smallest of all the other planets in the solar system, and its strong feature is that it has virtually no atmosphere. Therefore, it can reach temperatures of up to 400°C. Their colors vary between gray and brown.
Venus
Known for being the only one to translate in the opposite direction, it is the hottest planet in our system. Its temperatures can reach 460º. Although it is farther from the Sun than Mercury, it has a developed atmosphere, enhancing the greenhouse effect. Therefore, its color varies between orange and yellow.
Earth
Yuri Gagarin said the famous phrase: "The Earth is blue", when he arrived in space on April 12, 1961. This hue refers to the molecules present in the atmosphere, especially oxygen and nitrogen. When sunlight reaches the atmosphere, the reflection of these rays gives this color. Also, the great oceans contribute to the blue coloration.
Mars
Known as "The Red Planet", this coloration is due to iron oxide III or hematite.
Jupiter
The largest of all planets in the solar system is rich in hydrogen and helium. Due to these gases, its predominant color is brown. It also has yellow and red and white spots.
Saturn
Rich in hydrogen and helium gases, the planet abundant in rings and with flattened poles is composed of colors that transit between brown and yellow.
Uranus
Uranus is known as "The Ice Planet", because it has an atmosphere rich in methane, helium and hydrogen and, due to them, it is the planet that has the lowest temperatures. The resulting color is a vibrant blue-green.
Neptune
It has characteristics similar to Uranus, and that includes the composition of its atmosphere. Their color is also blue-green and they differ in size.
