However, it was only in 2020 that the company made a feature available that made it possible to mute chats indefinitely. What happens when I silence someone?
By muting a contact or groups, the conversations do not migrate to another area of the application — this only happens when they are archived. The chat that is muted will continue on the app's main screen and, if new messages are sent by the person, it will return to the top, but without notifying this interaction.
Currently, this function allows you to mute conversations for eight hours, a week or forever and, on your cell phone, you can still choose whether messages will appear in notifications or not. In any case, your smartphone will no longer alert new notifications from that chat.
If you want to unmute notifications for conversations and groups you've muted, the process is simple. Follow the same steps as when muting. Check it out: press the desired chat, tap the speaker-shaped icon at the top and disable the feature.
When should I mute someone?
Muting groups and some contacts is at your discretion, however, we can help you identify which conversations are interfering with your daily life. You know that group that you don't participate in but that is always busy, or that contact that sends you several chain letters and repeated messages? Well, depending on who it is, it is not always possible to act in a drastic way such as blocking or leaving the group without causing unnecessary discomfort. So that's what the mute option is for.
By choosing to use the feature, the chats that you have muted will not know, so the friendship can continue without any avoidable misunderstandings.
However, it is important to note that, even if muted, people will be able to check your activity in the app. This means that the “Online” and “Last seen” indicator, if enabled, will appear for these contacts normally. As such, the tool's restrictions are not similar to the blocking feature.
