Telegram is one of the most popular online messaging apps in the world and considered a potent rival of WhatsApp. However, because it is so versatile and is present on half of Brazilians' cell phones, it easily becomes a vehicle for fake news.
Thus, it is common to find several conspiracy theories about the country's electoral system, and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) became aware of the situation. Thus, this is why the TSE is considering abolishing Telegram in Brazil to avoid fake news in the 2022 elections.

TSE consideration to abolish Telegram in Brazil in the 2022 elections
TSE has been trying to get in touch with Telegram representatives for some time, but without success. In December 2021, Luís Roberto Barroso, president of the Court, decided to send a letter requesting a meeting to the executive director of Telegram, Pavel Durov.
The purpose of the meeting would be to discuss ways to eliminate misinformation and fake news circulating on the platform. However, Barroso got no response from Durov.
So far, Barroso is trying to join efforts to resolve the Telegram issue with the next president and vice president of the TSE. The purpose of the measure is to develop actions to protect the electoral process and contain the spread of fake news.
Telegram does not respond to TSE
The TSE stated that it sent the letter to two e-mails and also to a physical address in the United Arab Emirates. However, there was no response with the sending of messages and no one was located at the address.
Furthermore, Barroso stated in early January that, if the platform continued to ignore the Electoral Justice, the Telegram service would be suspended in the country. This is because failure to comply with electoral legislation results in consequences.
Finally, the TSE already has a partnership with other applications in Brazil that have tools to combat misinformation. Among them are WhatsApp, Twitter, Google, Instagram and Facebook, which makes Telegram the exception of the group.
