Spanish patriot born in Vivar, near Burgos, hero of the fight against the Moors. Son of a nobleman of the court of Castile, he was taken to the court of Ferdinand I. When Sancho II of Castile, Crown Prince and his childhood friend, took the throne, he named him commander of the royal troops, a post in which he waged a victorious campaign against the Moorish kingdom of al-Muqtadir.
Afterwards he helped the king in the fight against the brothers for the unification of the kingdom. With the death of his friend King Sancho, Afonso VI ascended the throne, who, suspicious of his loyalty, condemned him to exile and the hero began to serve the Moorish dynasty of Zaragoza. With the invasion of Spain by the Almoravids (1086), he was called back by Alfonso, but preferred to fight for the kingdom of Valencia, at which he became supreme magistrate of Moors and Christians.
He died in Valencia leaving a legend around his name, becoming the plot of the greatest epic poem in Spanish literature, Cantar de mío Cid (1410), and of unknown authorship. A hero who fought against his own king to defend freedom! Who bravely fought the Moors and won every battle until he freed Valencia!.
