Adding salt to coffee: a habit we all should adopt

Recently, in a conversation between Twitter users who were discussing their culinary preferences, a somewhat unusual idea came up.

When asked, user Steve Pretzel (@BirdRespecter) stated that adding salt to coffee can reduce the bitter taste of the beverage, being more effective than sugar.

“A small pinch of salt in black coffee removes the bitterness almost entirely. I thought this was common knowledge until my co-worker looked at me like I had horns for saying that the other day."

As it could not be otherwise, the reports of “Bird Respecter” caused the talk, with several other Twitter users commenting on their statements.

Incredibly, it makes sense to put salt in coffee

Although it is a strange measure, adding salt to coffee is not such an uncommon practice. In fact, this habit has many fans far and wide.

Among the most interesting reports about the culinary habit is that in World War II soldiers of several armies used salt to remove the bitterness of black coffee, not using sugar, honey or milk, for example.

When asked about the subject, Café Cairngorm coffee expert Kate Johnston explained further why adding salt to the drink can make a difference.

“If the cup of coffee is particularly bitter, adding salt is a better option than sugar and sweeteners, as it brings out the sweet notes in your coffee while canceling out too strong a flavor,” she said.

Also according to Kate, salt is a healthier option than sugar and milk, as it does not mask the taste of coffee. “It [salt] can bring out the natural flavors of the roasted coffee, rather than masking them like milk and sugar. This is a healthier option,” she said.

Finally, Kate Johnston even gave a tip for those who want to adhere to the habit of putting salt in coffee. “A little pinch of salt brings the espresso back to life, and when mixed with the other ingredients and ice, it tastes great,” she recommended.
