After a long impasse caused by Cade (Administrative Council for Economic Defense), the sale of Garoto was completed on June 7th. During the negotiations, there were readjustments regarding the sales contract and, among them, the modification of the packaging was at stake.
In addition, another reformulation was accepted and may go unnoticed: the Serenata is no longer a bonbon.
Is Serenata de Amor no longer a bonbon?
In previously recorded images, we can see Serenata de Amor being defined as “candy” on the packaging.
In recent images, the former bonbon has been referred to as “chocolate wafer”. For this, there is an economic justification that has been analyzed by several specialists.
Changing the description of products can be motivated by different reasons, and often companies do not explicitly clarify the reasons behind these changes. It is true that the change in the classification of products may be related to tax issues.
In the specific case mentioned, in which Serenata is no longer classified as a bonbon, the change may be related to taxes on different types of products.
While chocolates and products made from them are generally subject to a 5% rate of the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI), the wafer is exempt from this tax, paying 0%.
This simple change in product classification has the potential to generate significant savings in tax costs for industries. However, it is important to point out that this information is based on an assumption, and has not been officially confirmed by the companies in question.
