default is non-payment of a bill, debt or other financial obligation. When a person fails to pay a credit card bill, for example, he is in default with the company that offered him this service. With the increase in inflation, Brazilian families have prioritized the essentials – that is, expenses with food, housing and health. However, even the basics have been costly for some citizens. In this sense, bad debt has increasingly become part of Brazilians' lives.

The Boa Vista company carried out a survey of 1,500 Brazilians with the objective of finding out what weighed most on the families' budget in the last year and what are the main causes of indebtedness. In today's article, we're going to talk a little about this research and address the main causes of Brazilian household debt.
Main defaults
Check below the main causes of indebtedness in the last year, based on the research carried out by the company Boa Vista.
1. Food
Inflation has greatly increased food prices across the country and, as a result, 18% of people in default have stopped paying food expenses. Food is among the expenses that most weigh on families' pockets.
2. Personal loan
According to research carried out by the company Boa Vista, 15% of Brazilians in default are in this situation because of the personal loan. In addition to inflation, rising unemployment – even more so with the pandemic – has destabilized the budgets of thousands of people. For 27% of the interviewed Brazilians, unemployment is the main cause of the increase in defaults, since the decrease in income greatly harms Brazilians.
According to the survey, the payment of various bills – related to education, health, taxes, leisure – was what led 23% of Brazilians to default. In addition, about 63% of respondents stated that they had between three or more overdue accounts.
