What makes the eyes twitch?

First of all, it is necessary to understand what this tremor is. Scientifically called blepharospasm, it is an involuntary contraction of the small muscles present in the eyelids, which can be unilateral (in a single eye) or bilateral (in both eyes).

For this reason, this tremor is almost impossible to control, and can last from a few days to weeks and months. In this case, it becomes a big nuisance and can disturb concentration, especially when reading or using the computer and cell phone.

In general, the most common reasons for this tremor are stress, anxiety, nervousness and tiredness. Nowadays, due to the long hours of work and study, it is common to feel some of these sensations, or even all of them at once. That's why the number of people reporting blepharospasm has grown.

In addition, other causes associated with this condition are vitamin B deficiency, magnesium, excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol abuse or some recent emotional trauma. In more specific cases, the tremors are related to some malfunction of structures in the brain.

How to avoid?

Some simple attitudes can be adopted to help minimize this nuisance. However, if blepharospasm persists, it is always recommended to visit an ophthalmologist to assess your case. Here are some ways to lessen eye twitching:

  • Sleep at least 7 hours every night;
  • Have a good diet, rich in sources of vitamin B, especially B12, such as meat, fish, chicken and eggs;
  • Hydrate well;
  • Reduce consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol, and other caffeine-rich beverages;
  • Avoid possible causes of stress.
