When traveling abroad, many people tend to bring different items for friends, family, personal use and even with the intention of reselling. However, when bringing these items purchased abroad to Brazil, it is essential to pay attention to the rules imposed by the Federal Revenue Service.
Since last year, the limit on purchases abroad has been raised from US$500 to US$1,000, or rather R$5,000, and this quota is renewed every month. In addition, you also have a US$1,000 limit for purchases in stores at the airport.
However, if your purchase exceeds this amount, your purchase will be taxed and you will need to pay the import tax under the Federal Revenue rules.
What escapes the fees?
All items considered to be for personal use are outside this quota established by the Federal Revenue. An example of these items are books, brochures, newspapers and magazines.
However, it is worth mentioning that even so, these items have to meet some rules, they are:
- The acquisition was necessary according to the trip; the person's physical condition; the object helped in the professional activities carried out during the trip, such as, for example, a camera for photographers; the object must have signs of use; the nature and quantity need to make sense with the trip.
Having a sign of use is essential
Removing the product from the packaging will do nothing to defend that it is for personal use, after all, the quantity and reason for having the item is important. An example of this are the smartphones, if you have more than one, only one of them will enter the personal use quota.
How do quotas work?
Every acquired exemption is non-transferable and individual, that is, it is impossible to combine your quota with someone else's to guarantee that the products are exempt from taxes.
It is worth mentioning that items that can cause physical or chemical dependency, cannot in any way be inside of the luggage of children or adolescents, even if these minors are accompanied by their responsible.
