A new product for identification and diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever was recently registered and approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).

Developed by the Institute of Molecular Biology of Paraná, this kit is the second in Brazil with this specific purpose.

It is important to emphasize that the transmission of the disease occurs through the bite of the star tick. infected, not being transmitted directly from person to person or through contact with animals contaminated.

Humans are often considered accidental hosts for the tick, while equines, such as horses, are the preferred hosts for the bacteria responsible for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. However, the disease can also affect cattle, domestic animals and wild animals.

In addition to fever, common symptoms include headaches and muscle aches, malaise, nausea, vomiting, hemorrhagic manifestations and the appearance of reddish spots on the skin. skin. It's important to be aware of these signs to seek proper diagnosis and treatment.

According to information released by the Ministry of Health, Brazil reported more than 2,000 cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever between January 2013 and June 14, 2023. In 2023 alone, eight deaths were recorded in the country.

The Southeast Region concentrated the majority of cases, totaling 1,292 occurrences. This year, 53 cases were registered throughout the country, 30 of them in the Southeast.

As for deaths related to “tick disease”, the country has recorded 703 deaths since 2013, 623 of them in the Southeast Region. Until June 14, 2023, eight deaths were recorded in Brazil, all in the Southeast.
