The company check Point Reserarch, specialized in cybersecurity, analyzed files with data from users of WhatsApp for sale on Darknet and registered 360 million phone numbers from 108 users countries.

The Portuguese were the hardest hit. Around 2.2 million people had their records affected. It is an almost unprecedented case, since the international dialing code files, for example, were offered for sale for the first time.

According to Check, even if these sales, at first, are only active phone numbers and not the messages themselves, this violation could have major consequences. These numbers could be used as part of cyber attacks. phishing.

The company has advised people using the app to be very careful when received messages that ask them to click on any links or messages shared, links, etc.

After gaining access to the phone number, cybercriminals can sell such contacts as vishing or smshing. We are talking about a social engineering attack, where the victim provides information over the phone, while the other is conducted via SMS.

According to Check, during the holidays, there was a 17% increase in attacks phishing in emails related to Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday. After this scenario, Check Point Research asked users to always make sure the sender is trustworthy. Also, do not click on any links that look suspicious.
