Lesson plan – The characteristics of animals

THEME: Characteristics of the animals

SUGGESTED TIME: 1 class of 50 minutes

GOALS:

  • Identify differences in the physical characteristics of animals;
  • Recognize yourself as a mammalian animal;
  • List and describe all the differences between the features;
  • Establish a relationship between the physical characteristics of animals and their habitat.

MATERIAL REQUIRED:

  • Blackboard and chalk;
  • Images of animals on paper or digital media.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Introduce the theme to the students, show that animals change according to time or species.
  2. Show students pictures of babies and others with growth to the approximate age the students are now. Ask them if they are all the same species and what changes have taken place.
  3. Talk about what might have happened if these changes had not happened and how they are important for us to adapt to the environment we are living in.
  4. At this point, ask all students to look around and compare their own characteristics, such as hand size, foot size, height, eye color, skin color, hair type and color. It is important that they realize that even though we are all the same species, we have many different characteristics.
  5. Now show pictures of different animals and ask them to compare with each other. Make a list of things that are the same and different on the board. For example: all animals have 2 eyes. Man is bipedal, cat and dog are quadrupedal.
  6. Discuss changes in body features to adapt to the animal's habitat and species behavior. Like, for example, the development of wings in birds, since they need to fly, and the presence of breasts in mammals, since they need to feed their young.
  7. Close the class by debating the general characteristics of animals and relating them to the habitat, type of food, type of reproduction that each one of them has.

ASSESSMENT:

The evaluation of this class can be done through the participation of the students in the questions discussed in the classroom.
