Studying is a solitary task that demands a lot from the candidate. In many cases, the effort of hours poring over the contents does not generate the expected result, so frustration can appear with some frequency. There are cases of people who dedicate themselves, but cannot absorb the information. Likewise, there are those who have given their best and still failed to reach the desired grade. What, after all, is efficient when studying?

For new university students who have recently entered higher education or who are about to enter, this feeling of inefficiency may arise when it is necessary to study new content. There are many challenges that each and every student will eventually face in the academic field. The greatest of all goals is to be able to study and reconcile adult life with the demands of college. It's not easy for anyone.
Matheu Bernacki, professor at Chapel Hill (USA), associate at the School of Education at the University of North Carolina (UNC) and expert in the science of learning, reported on effective methods for to study.
Science studies how learning works in practice and points out techniques of what works and what does not work in the learning process. In an interview with BBC News Brasil, Bernacki commented on the fact:
“There are students who try tremendously but wrongly and accumulate too much knowledge superficial or declaratory, without being able to reach a more conceptual level", pointed out the reality of many students. In view of this, together with their professional colleagues, the group was able to develop study techniques.
Methods for studying: what doesn't work?
Studying in the last hours before exams
This is a very common case among all students who spend the previous day on books and are left without sleep to study. The result will only be for the test, as the material will not be acquitted. Bernacki explained that in this way the content guarantees little learning, serving only for the moment when the individual is under test.
Reread the texts and underline them
For learning, rereading is indispensable, but it is not enough for the student to be able to master what he has studied. Rereading causes the feeling that the text has already been studied, so your mind is not comfortable to understand a little more.
“As for underlining, there is mixed evidence: if you use (the technique) as an intentional process, you reflect on what is happening. highlighting in the text, taking notes and using them to advance your (study) strategy, can be very productive,” he said. Bernacki.
when there are distractions
Studying near too many distractions, such as social media, can divide a student's attention. The case is known as “multitasking”, which occurs when distraction can occur at any time and take away your focus.
How to get better results in studies?
Instead of desperately studying for the last few hours, study in sessions.
Set limits on study hours. Initially, do it for short sessions, have a moment dedicated to distraction and take a break. Experts point out that longer sessions can lead to wasted time, which makes the study period inefficient. This same method is useful to not end up getting distracted by social networks, for example.
Stipulate a moment to concentrate and a short break to be rewarded for concentration while you were studying.
Swap rereading and underlining for an interactive study
Instead of rereading the same text for hours on end, look for a new alternative: interact with what you are reading! Ask possible questions about what you are studying, question the content. Then explain it to yourself out loud. Point out the result of the questions that were asked.
