Since they appeared, still in the 1950s, HDs or hard disks quickly became one of the main pieces of the technological revolution that was to come. After all, these components were -and still are, in many cases- the data storage memory of computers.
In the beginning, hard disks represented a huge technological advance, since the first storage machines literally filled an entire room and had just over 5MB of capacity.

However, a few years ago, another type of memory began to become popular, the so-called SSD. In this way, hard disks began to go into obsolescence.
SSDs are thinner and lighter than HDs, as they work with a much simpler and more versatile circuit, which makes access to stored items simpler and faster.
For all this, experts point out that soon HDs will no longer be produced, going down in history as a relic related to the technological revolution.
2028: the end of the line for hard drives
According to Shawn Rosemarin, who is vice president of the company Pure Storage, hard drives are starting to disappear from the market due to two main factors: power and speed.
Rosemarin states that many Data Centers around the world still use hard disks and, in these locations, it is noticed that the power consumption is between 80% and 90% higher than where SSDs are the drives used.
In addition, the speed of data transmission is much higher when SSDs are used, according to Shawn Rosemarin. Furthermore, SSDs are cheaper than HDs, a fact that represents another “lime dust” in hard disks.
Still according to Shawn Rosemarin's predictions, at the pace it is going, the production of new HDs will become unfeasible and will end in mid-2028. If this holds true, the history of the hard disk will end some 70 years after its glorious beginnings.
