The State of Rio de Janeiro ranks as the second largest economy in Brazil. For this it has an industrial park and especially the tourism industry, since the state capital is recognized as “the wonderful city” and is known internationally.
The State's economy is diversified, the industrial park is composed of metallurgical, steel, chemical, food, mechanical, publishing and cellulose industries.
The main economic activity in the State of Rio de Janeiro is linked to the tertiary sector and essentially to the provision of services, the smallest productive participation is agriculture in the composition of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) state.
In this segment of the economy, the State houses the headquarters of important companies such as Tim, Oi, Telemar, Embratel, Intelig and Vésper. In the retail sales segment, it houses the headquarters of stores such as Lojas Americanas, Blockbuster, Americanas.com and Submarino, all of the same group.
In the industrial sector, production involves segments of metallurgy, steel, gas-chemical, petrochemical, naval, automobile, audiovisual, cement, food, mechanics, oil extraction among others.

In oil production, headquarters of large companies linked to the sector, such as Shell, Esso, Ipiranga, El Paso, etc., are established.
In agriculture, Rio de Janeiro is not expressive in production or in cultivated area, that's why there was no process of agricultural modernization and mechanization, as occurred in other states Brazilians. Even with the productive impediments in the agricultural sector, the State stands out in the production of sugar cane, as well as cassava, tomatoes, rice, beans, corn, potatoes, oranges and bananas.
In extractivism it occupies a prominent place in the extraction of salt, limestone, dolomite and marble, and especially oil, responsible for a large part of the national production.
