Feelings of guilt can be mild or intense and can be triggered by a variety of situations, such as:

  • Hurt someone's feelings;
  • Not achieving a personal or professional goal;
  • Missing an appointment;
  • Not helping someone in need;
  • Doing something that goes against one's moral or religious beliefs.

Ways to reduce the feeling of guilt

Researchers at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Basel conducted a study to identify whether feelings of guilt can be reduced by taking placebos.

Thus, the participants were placed in three conditions: some did not take medication, other participants in a group received pills placebo with the misleading information that it was a real drug, while participants in another group received another placebo.

Both groups taking a placebo were told that what they received would be effective against feelings of guilt. Results showed that feelings of guilt were significantly reduced in both placebo groups compared to those without medication.

Other scientific studies have shown that placebo effects can be powerful in treating depression.

“The administration of open-label placebos, in particular, is a promising approach, as it preserves the patient autonomy, allowing patients to be fully aware of how the intervention it works."

The study results are a promising first step toward symptom-specific and more ethical treatments for psychological complaints using open-label placebos, according to Dilan Sezer.

For Dilan Sezer: “The use of open-label placebos would be a cheap and direct treatment option for many psychological and physical complaints”. The feeling of guilt can be a natural response to inappropriate behavior, but when it becomes constant and excessive, it can lead to emotional problems such as depression and anxiety.
