Exercise linked to attention control in teens

Recently, a new study which pointed to the effect of vigorous physical exercise on female adolescents. The results of tests carried out with girls aged 15 to 18 years showed that some exercises can improve attention control. This control is associated with situations in which we are distracted and in which we end up acting impulsively.

The study on the effect of exercise on young people was carried out by scientists at the University of Illinois, in the United States. Research leader Professor Dominika Pindus says:

“Attentional control is an aspect of inhibitory control. We can think of inhibitory control as our ability to control attention when distracted and our ability to control acting on impulse.”

The professor at the department of community health added that “studies have found that inhibitory control is related to better academic performance”. Previous studies have already shown that people who exhibit greater inhibitory control manage to deal better with finances, health and even exhibit a lower chance of committing a crime.

For this research, Pindus' team used data from a controlled study with high school students in New South Wales, Australia. The data served to assess gender differences in the relationship between physical activity and cognition.

The information included daily volume and intensity of exercises, recorded by wrist devices for seven days. The device measured changes in acceleration, which indicate a continuous signal of movement.

As a result of data analysis, the researchers noticed that the students who presented greater levels of intensity in exercises, were able to maintain the highest levels of attention in tests cognitive. In addition, they were less distracted and were able to focus on the information given.

On the other hand, those participants who had a lower level of physical intensity during the exercises took longer to respond to the tests and still showed less accuracy in responding to activities that displayed information that distracted them, thus indicating a problem with focus.
