This week, Google announced the launch of the Flood Hub in more than 80 nations, including Brazil. With this, the tool will reach an audience of more than 460 million individuals around the globe.
The Flood Hub is a tool powered by artificial intelligence that, according to Google, anticipates and predicts flooding and flooding up to a week in advance.

Through the use of AI, residents and authorities in regions frequently affected by flooding have the ability to prepare for the impending problem.
To make its projections, the Flood Hub takes into account several public domain data sources, such as weather forecasts and images captured by satellites.
Generally, the data collected by the tool becomes even more available and accurate after heavy rainfall events.
With this, the technology developed by Google combines two models: the Hydrological Model, which estimates the amount of water flowing in a river, and the Flood Model, which predicts the areas potentially affected by the overflow of the water body and the expected depth of the inundation.
Yossi Matias, vice president of engineering and research and crisis response at Google, said that the Flood Hub's main functionality is to identify river overflows.
“One of the big advantages of using AI in this way is the advanced warning that allows us to help communities that would be affected by a river flood,” said Matias.
On the Google portal, it is explained that, in addition to providing reliable information and resources related to floods, the Flood Hub also plays a crucial role in issuing forest fire alerts and earthquakes.
Currently, there is no data available about the Brazilian cities that are compatible with this tool. However, more information is expected to be released soon.
