A new feature called “Screen Distance” will be present in the iOS 17 and on iPadOS. The idea is that this feature warns us when we are holding the iPhone or iPad too close to our eyes for too long.
Apple says this can help avoid eye strain and even reduce the risk of myopia, especially in children.

New feature in iOS17
The new role was announced at the WWDC 2023 event, which took place recently in California. It will be available on all iPhones and iPadsPro with Face ID and can be enabled in settings.
The TrueDepth camera, which is used for Face ID, will measure the distance between the screen and the eyes. If the user holds the cell phone too close for a long time, a full screen warning will appear advising to move the device away.
The ideal distance to keep between the iphoneand the eyes is 40 to 45 cm. Keeping that distance helps take better care of your eye health. If the distance is less than 30 cm, an “iPhone is too close” message will appear when the function is activated.
To continue using the device, just click "Continue" when a check mark appears on the screen, after moving the iPhone to a safe distance.
How to activate the feature?
Open the “Usage Time” tab in Settings;
Select “Screen Distance” in the “Limit Usage” section;
The function will be explained in some screens, and in each screen you can press “Continue” and at the end “Activate screen distance”.

The functionality is still in beta for developers, but should be released in September of this year. Models that support the feature are the iPhone XS and newer, as well as the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros released in 2018 or later.
