Alcon Entertainment is developing the feature film, and Sony Pictures will release "Garfield" in theaters worldwide, except in China. No release date has been set.

David Reynolds (“Finding Nemo”) wrote the screenplay for the film, which is being directed by Mark Dinadl (“Chicken Little,” “The Emperor’s New Groove”).

Alcon acquired the rights to "Garfield" from comic book series creator and brand Jim Davis, who will also serve as executive producer. His "Garfield" comic debuted in 1978 and follows the life of the lazy orange cat and his interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and Jon's pet dog, Odie.

Although "Garfield" originally appeared in 41 newspapers, its success and popularity made it one of the most popular comics fastest growing ever, appearing in 2,580 newspapers and magazines, with an estimated 260 million readers.

Davis will executive produce the film alongside Bridget McMeel of Amuse. John Cohen and Steven P. Wegner will serve as producers along with Alcon principals Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Craig Sost will also serve as executive producer.
