Swiss company Panter&Tourron and Danish design studio Space10 have teamed up to create an innovative furniture solution: a fully folding sofa.
Using Artificial Intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, they developed a revolutionary design that allows the sofa to be compressed into an envelope format.

The sofa is modular and features adjustable arms and slim panels, giving you the flexibility to add upholstery as desired.
Weighing approximately 10 kg, it is extremely light and can be easily carried by a single person when folded.
How did the experts come up with the folding sofa?
The team of designers already had the idea of creating furniture with an innovative design since 2019, however, the initiative was temporarily interrupted due to the pandemic. With the emergence of more accessible artificial intelligence tools, work has resumed, providing new opportunities.
Georgina McDonald, one of the Danish team members, recalls that Artificial Intelligence initially reacted negatively to the project. However, this challenging answer only motivated the researchers even more to advance in the creation of the prototype, overcoming difficulties and turning the idea into reality.
According to Georgina McDonald, a member of the Danish team, she asked ChatGPT the following question during project development: “Would it be possible to fit a sofa in an envelope?
Surprisingly, the initial response was negative. This answer sparked great enthusiasm in the team, as the algorithm was programmed with associations and concepts related to sofas and envelopes.
To arrive at the final design of the folding sofa, the designers explored several iterations, making use of of artificial intelligence-based imaging tools such as Midjourney and Dall-E.
These tools were essential to create a model that resembles the seats in a cafeteria, being able to fold like an origami.
The folding sofa is currently on display at the Copenhagen Architecture Festival, the wraparound sofa is not yet available for purchase. The creators decided to seek public feedback before improving it.
According to Georgina McDonald, one of those responsible for the project, although tools such as ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and Dall-E helpful in the design process, they cannot guarantee the comfort of the sofa, the softness of the fabric, or the safety of the product.
