Walmart tries to overtake Amazon in e-commerce market leadership

It is estimated that the amazon, the current online sales leader, had a 39.5% share of the US market last year, while the walmart obtained only 7% of performance in electronic sales, points out research carried out by eMarketer. However, as a result of social isolation as a protective measure adopted to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a large expansion of online sales by company, which had the advantage of the “curbside collection” logistics implemented years before any other retailer dreamed that a health crisis would devastate the world.

Currently, with the return of customers to physical stores, the generalized economic crisis and high prices of items consumer goods, the consumer started to spend less with the most lucrative e-commerce niches, such as the sale of clothes.

Consequently, with stocks falling, Tom Ward, the newest director in charge of e-commerce, states its desire to “increase online sales and make it easier for customers to shop as want”. He, along with the company's CEO, Doug McMillon, are looking at various internal logistics changes, such as delivering service by drones and optimize the route of its drivers, reducing gasoline costs and delivery time, at the lowest possible cost for the client.

Backed by the company's reputation, more than 31 US fulfillment centers and more than 3,500 stores across the country, Walmart is able to serve approximately 80% of the American population by delivering to same day. “We want to solve all the magic behind the scenes and make it perfect so that consumers can buy a steak from filet and a bag of apples and a T-shirt and a microwave and can receive them anywhere they want”, exemplifies Ward.

The changes don't stop there, and they are even more ambitious! After implementing the Walmart+ and Walmart + Weekend services, where the customer has the benefit of free shipping and free delivery, and respectively access to exclusive offers for members only, the company has now started yet another service aimed at increasing e-commerce sales: Walmart InHome.

This daring service proposes that an employee highly accredited by the company supply your pantry directly. That's exactly what you read: customers hand over their house keys and Walmart keeps everything in order so nothing is ever missing!
