Surprising: pair of stars that 'can release gold' are seen in the Milky Way

Astrological matters always arouse interest in many people. Often, this scientific area brings news. Recently seen a explosion without a glow that became known as an “ultra-stripped” supernova. The phenomenon led researchers to discover two stars 11,000 light years away from Earth. See details!

According to studies, this was the first confirmed detection of a kilonova, which occurs when neutrons collide and explode, releasing gold and other heavy elements into space. The expectation is that there are only ten star pairs like this in the Milky Way.

This discovery was not easy.

It all started in 2016 when NASA spotted an X-ray flash of light. After this perception, astronomers went to find out, through a 1.5 meter telescope, whether the light rays were on or not.

The student Clarissa Pavao, with the intention of having experiences with research in astronomy, asked her professor to share the data from the telescope. She concluded, therefore, that due to the fact that Be stars exhibit discs of matter around them, it was difficult to identify which elements compose them.

What was concluded with the studies?

With the results of the research, Richardson, a professor at Pavao, realized that the star binary system of the phenomenon under study was CPD-29 2176. In this type of system, one star orbits the other in a circular pattern that repeats every 60 days.

The two displayed different sizes and rotated around each other. Over time, the larger star began releasing its hydrogen to its partner. The smaller one then went on to grow to 18 or 19 times the mass of our sun.

Interaction results

The star, after this contact, was so exhausted that it generated a huge explosion. As mass and angular momentum were passed on to the Be star, it began to release a disk of gas to maintain its balance and not end up falling apart.

The second star will, in time, burn its fuel, expand and release material like the first. After billions of years, the two neutron stars will transform into a kilonova and release heavy elements like gold into the Earth. universe.
