When we buy a bunch of fresh vegetables at the fair or market, we hope they don't wither before we can eat them.
But before you know it, most of those fresh produce are starting to wilt and turn yellow. But what you probably don't know is that many items can go into the fridge and last much longer, see which ones:
- Apples
There is no better place to store one of the Brazilians' most practical and favorite fruits. Apples, when stored in a refrigerator, can last for long periods of time without starting to go bad.
In fact, most commercial apples are stored for about 6 to 12 months, just needing to be at a low temperature, which slows down their rotting.
- citrus fruits
This type of fruit, such as lemons, oranges or tangerines, are typical of regions with warmer climates. Therefore, it is common to expect these fruits to rot faster.
However, storing these fruits in the refrigerator can keep them fresh for more than two weeks. Another cool tip is the use of airtight jars, which can further increase the shelf life of fruits like lemons and oranges.
- Cabbage, lettuce and other leaves
Most leaves, like kale, are mostly water. It is for this reason that, outside the refrigerator, these vegetables spoil and turn yellow faster.
When stored in the fridge, these leaves, which normally last a few days, can last up to two weeks. A valuable tip is to buy them together at the stem, as this increases their conservation time.
- carrot and cabbage
Surely you keep carrots in the fruit bowl, outside the fridge, or at least know someone who does. The carrot has a good durability outside the refrigerator, however, when we keep it refrigerated, we enhance its duration.
They do not soften for up to 1 month. The same goes for cabbages.
