He doesn't know everything! ChatGPT writes long texts, but slips in THIS regard

the teaching of mathematics advanced education presents challenges for both students and teachers. That's why many educators are turning to ChatGPT for help.

According to a recent Forbes article, 51% of teachers surveyed admitted to using ChatGPT as a teaching support tool, with 10% of them making daily use of the platform.

This Artificial Intelligence can facilitate the transmission of technical information in a more accessible, although not always able to provide correct solutions, especially in high-level mathematics advanced.

A team of international researchers ran tests to assess the software's abilities, providing the generative AI program with challenging graduate-level math questions.

Despite demonstrating some difficulty in most calculations, the right answers can overcome such difficulty. The correct answers indicated that it can be a useful tool for mathematics researchers and teachers, functioning as a specialized search engine.

ChatGPT can be efficient at math, although it makes slips

The emergence of ChatGPT has generated mixed opinions about the technology, with extreme assessments being common. Some see the AI as highly efficient, while others consider it unsuitable for use. Frieder Simon, a PhD candidate at the University of oxford and lead author of the study, noted that emphasis has been placed on extremes.

For example, ChatGPT demonstrated remarkable performance in the language intelligence test of Psychology Today, but scored disappointingly on the CPA exam at Accounting Today.

Simon explained that there are intermediate cases, in which ChatGPT proves to be effective for some students and educators, while for others, not so much.

When it comes to high school and undergraduate math tests, ChatGPT performs well, ranking in the 89th percentile on the test. Surprisingly, it also received a B grade on the quantum computing final exam written by technology expert Scott Aaronson.

It is important to point out that the evaluation of ChatGPT's capabilities may require different types of tests. Leah Henrickson, professor of digital media at the University of Queensland, points out that the media tends to highlight ChatGPT's ability to pass popular standardized tests.

For this, it is necessary to consider that these tests often focus on memorizing facts, not necessarily reflecting intelligence itself. ChatGPT can succeed in these tests due to its ability to recall information acquired during the training.
