Crime: Woman attends high school at 29 out of loneliness

Hyejeong Shin, a 29-year-old woman, was accused of using false documents to register as a high school student in New Jersey and attend classes for a period of four days. On Monday, a state judge ruled that she could participate in a pretrial intervention program.

Shin had already pleaded not guilty in March to the charge of providing a false government document. She revealed that she would like to live new friendships in the school environment and recognized the mistake, trying to correct it.

As part of the process, Shin will undergo a mental health assessment. If she successfully completes the pretrial intervention program, the charge against her could be dropped.

South Korean Woman Enrolled in School Because She's Lonely

According to the defense attorney, Hyejeong Shin is a South Korean citizen who came to the United States alone at age 16 to study at a private boarding school. After the school term, she graduated from the

According to the lawyer, Hyejeong Shin had no malicious intentions when enrolling in the New Brunswick High School in January of this year. Her motivation was simply to return to a safe and nurturing environment, a place she remembered fondly.

Authorities revealed that Shin obtained the phone numbers of some students who helped her become familiar with the school and continued sending them text messages even after discovering their false license plate, which was not looked upon favorably by the authorities.

After the discovery of the case, the South Korean woman was banned from the school premises and officials advised students to avoid any contact with her.

According to the authorities, Shin presented a false birth certificate when enrolling in the institution, which was not noticed by the school administration. It is important to note that the school district is home to approximately 10,000 students, and this incident has affected the school environment and student safety.
