Launched in 2019, the National Program of Civic-Military Schools (Pecim) aimed to enable the transformation of public schools to the civic-military model.
In this format, civilian educators assumed responsibility for the pedagogical part, while administrative management was the responsibility of the military.

However, the federal government decided to end the program. This information was communicated to the secretaries of Education across the country through a letter, released by Estadão and obtained by G1.
The abrupt closure of Pecim raises questions about the reasons and consequences of this decision, as well as and about the future of education in the country, since several schools had already adhered to the model civic-military.
At the same time, the subject raises debates and reflections on the different approaches to management and pedagogy in Brazilian public schools.
Federal Government decreed the end of Pecim
The closure of the National Program for Civic-Military Schools will have an impact on around 200 schools that adhered to this format until the year 2022, according to data released by the Ministry of Education (MEC) on the website of program.
These schools represent approximately 0.1% of the total of 178.3 thousand public schools existing in Brazil, according to the most recent School Census.
Some states that had greater adherence to the model of civic-military schools include Santa Catarina with 21 schools, Rio Grande do Sul with 17, Minas Gerais with 15, São Paulo with 12, Paraná and Rio de Janeiro with 11. The project had a significant cost, although it represented a minimal portion of the country's public schools.
In 2022, the estimated budget for the program was approximately R$ 64 million. This amount is almost twice the amount intended to implement the New High School, which was estimated at R$ 33 million.
From 2020 to 2022, the share of the Ministry of Education (MEC) budget allocated to the program more than tripled. In 2020, when the project started, the allocated amount was R$ 18 million.
MEC's advisory has not yet commented on actions to conduct and remedy possible disorders caused by the interruption of Pecim.
