O Google is working on developing a free moderation tool aimed at enabling smaller sites to identify and remove terrorist content. That's because new laws in the UK and Europe are forcing digital companies to step up their fight against illegal content.

O program is being jointly developed by the research giant's Jigsaw team and Tech Against Terrorism (Technology Against Terrorism), a United Nations-backed initiative that assists companies in policing digital terrorism.
According to the Chief Executive of the Jigsaw team, Yasmin Green, many of the sites are unable to police the content because they do not have employees or technology enough, which is quite demanding and sometimes expensive to accomplish. She went on to say that these sites don't want terrorist content on them, but that there is still a vast amount of such material.
In line with new legislation in the UK and Europe, large companies, or big techs, are not putting enough effort into properly policing digital content. Currently, digital companies make more efforts to remove extremist content from their addresses, as there are penalties and fines more severe in case of non-compliance.
According to a report by the Global Internet Forum to Combat Terrorism, in 2021, out of every 10,000 posts on Facebook, six had extremist content or terrorist. On smaller platforms, on the other hand, with less supervision and inspection, the percentage reached 50% of the content, with 5 thousand of every 10,000 publications being of an extremist or terrorist nature.
This new tool seeks to reduce the amount of algorithms and increase the chances that human moderators will decide which contents are dangerous and illegal, removing them from digital addresses. The tests will start at the beginning of this year, using two sites not yet named as a base.
