Narcolepsy and its symptoms

It is not known exactly what is the cause of narcolepsy, however, chemical conditions in the brain, generic factors and even a low production of hypocretin, which is a substance responsible for keeping us awake during the day. However, although there are treatments that can help, this disease does not actually have a cure. Currently, the main treatment to alleviate symptoms is the use of medication. Here are some of the main symptoms:

  • Hallucinations
  • naps
  • automatic behavior
  • Fatigue and feeling tired
  • Lack of concentration
  • Memory loss
  • Sleep paralysis
  • fragmented sleep
  • Waking up frequently at night
  • mood swings

Furthermore, there are two different types of narcolepsy and their classification depends on the symptoms. What differentiates type 1 from type 2 narcolepsy is the presence of cataplexy. Therefore, when the person does not have this lack of muscle control, it is classified as a case of type 2 narcolepsy.

Ultimately, to make any diagnosis, doctors need to examine the patient and look at their history to rule out other conditions. In addition, tests such as polysomnography are crucial.
