Mattel launches the first doll with scoliosis

The company that makes the popular Barbie dolls, Mattel, is taking important steps towards the normalization and inclusion of scoliosis among children. The line of dolls for Barbie's little sister Chelsea will have a new addition, coming with a curvaceous spine and a removable spine support for the little woman toy. Mattel says this move is intended to normalize the support equipment needed by people suffering from scoliosis, as well as promote greater inclusion even for small children, who, when having contact with toys like this, already grow up considering this a situation normal.

The team responsible for developing the doll worked closely with a certified neurosurgeon and specialist in complex spinal disorders in children, Dr. Luke Macyszyn, who advised and accompanied the team throughout the development of toy.

The doll comes in at 6 inches tall, wearing a pink dress and removable spine support, white shoes and wavy brown hair.

According to Mattel Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Lisa McKnight, “We believe in the power of representation and are dedicated to creating dolls with a variety of appearances so kids can see themselves in Barbie – and now in a line that celebrates her little sister, Chelsea”.

She goes on to say, “We are proud to release the first Chelsea doll with a stand. for the removable column to continue to promote greater reflection on the world children come to around.
