Students unite in lawsuit against university for offering 'useless' course

Imagine being in one faculty, invest money and time only to find out later that it was worthless? This is what has happened to about 20 students at James Cook University (JCU), in the city of Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

The Business and Commerce course they had invested in for years was 'useless' and they decided to file a class action lawsuit.

Sam Boon, a former student at the institution, reports that he enrolled in the Business and Commerce course when he watched a promotional video announcing specialization in the area.

The advertisement showed that the course was accredited to work in the financial area and was sufficient for a trained professional to enter the job market.

Students discover that diploma is useless and revolt

The dream turned into a nightmare when Boon discovered the truth. He disclosed that JCU does not have the credential to develop the expertise and was not licensed to train a finance consultant.

Unfortunately, the former student of the institution only discovered the problem when he was about to graduate from the university and tried to resolve it with the administration through emails.

Along with Boon, other students became aware of the seriousness of the case and filed a class action lawsuit against JCU, seeking redress for the major problem. Many of them were harmed financially, psychologically and lost great opportunities due to JCU's lack of responsibility.

Duke Myerteza, a lawyer representing 18 students in the lawsuit, said he had not seen a similar case even though he has more than 30 years of experience in law.

The specialist also highlighted that the courses should not be advertised as accredited, as they do not comply with important – and main – information to attract new students.

In its defense, JCU responded to the portal A Current Affair saying that the course was accredited as of July 1, 2022. The university also said that the students received the institution's accredited diploma.
