The journal BMJ Global Health recently published a study that points to a worrying estimate: more than 1 billion young people may be at hearing risk due to the practice of listening to music at loud decibels.

Young people are at risk from listening to loud music

The studies were carried out based on analyzed data from 33 articles, in surveys and sampling carried out between the years 2000 and 2021. It had an estimated number of over 19,000 participants in 20 countries ranging in age from 12 to 34.

A good part of the studies focused on the use of headphones, while another part of the evaluation dealt with places where loud music can also harm health. Within the study, it was found that 48% of people were exposed to high levels of noise in certain environments and 24% of them made excessive use of headphones.

To arrive at the study estimate number, the calculations were based on the world population within the chosen age group. The world has about 2.7 billion young people, so the research estimates that 670 thousand every 1.35 billion individuals at this age are at serious risk of hearing problems.

Seeking to alleviate the problems, some solutions are pointed out and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in cases of environments. They are: maximum sound level of 100 decibels, individual hearing protection, access to quiet areas, guidance for local workers, among other points.

As for headphones, it is recommended that the volume be kept moderate or low. It is interesting to use noise canceling accessories, have regular hearing tests, etc.

In this way, it will be possible to listen to music both on headphones and in nightclubs and other entertainment venues without putting the health of the ears at risk. Carrying out regular exams, as indicated by the guidelines given by the WHO, is also extremely important and recommended.
