King of France (1137-1180) of the Capetian dynasty, born in Paris, in whose reign the construction of the famous Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris began. Second son and successor of Louis VI the Fat and of Adelaide de Maurienne (1100-1154), he assumed the throne with death of her father soon after marrying (1137) Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), heiress of William II, Duke of Aquitaine.
A controversy with Pope Innocent II over his refusal to accept the papal appointment to the Archbishopric of Bourges led to serious friction with the Church of Rome. The subject was resolved after the intervention of Bernardo de Clairvaux, already in the papacy of Celestine II, successor of Innocent. During this fight Geoffrey IV Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, completed the conquest of Normandy.
As part of the papal agreement, he set out on the Second Crusade (1147), after appointing Abbé Suger as regent. The crusade failed, and he returned two years later (1149). With Eleanor he had two daughters, namely, Maria (1138-1198) and Eleonora (1149-1184), but suspecting his wife's infidelity he succeeded in the annulment (1152) of his marriage. She subsequently married Henry Plantagenet, the future Henry II of England and son of Geoffrey, who thus claimed Aquitaine and precipitated a new war between France and the English.
He remarried (1154) with Constance of Castile (1140-1160) and had two new daughters: Marguerite and Alix, Countess of Vexin. He married for the third time (1160), now to Adèle de Champagne (1140-1206) with whom he became father to Philippe II (1165-1223) and Agnès (1171-1240).
The French king supported Thomas Becket during his exile from England and the revolt of Henry's sons (1173–1774), but he did not gain any territory. He completed his father's job of subduing the barons in the royal domain and continued to increase his influence over more distant vassals. He was succeeded by his son Philip II. He died in the monastery of Saint-Pont, Allier, and was buried in the Basilique de Saint-Denis.
