Red Alert: These five states could suffer from flooding

Although we associate summer in Brazil with toned bodies on our paradisiacal beaches, this season of the year also brings with it torrential rain across the country. In recent years, tragedies involving water, such as floods and landslides, have become frequent in December and January.

risk of flooding

According to the most recent survey by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), history should repeat itself in 2022 and 2023. According to the agency, five Brazilian states are in Red alert and are at serious risk of flooding: Paraná, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and part of Tocantins.

In addition to flooding, Inmet's red alert also concerns landslides and river overflows. The forecast is that it will rain more than 100 mm per day in these five states.

Each millimeter of rain corresponds to one liter of water in an area of one square meter. Thus, the forecast is that it will rain 100 liters per day. It's too much!

orange alert

Other federations in Brazil should also be concerned about the rains in the coming days. According to Inmet, 18 states are on orange alert: Amazonas, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Alagoas, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Pará, Pernambuco, Rondônia, Roraima, Sergipe, Ceará, Goiás, Paraíba, Piauí and part of Tocantins.

The forecast is that it will rain between 50 and 100 mm per day.

In addition to the risks of flooding with the rains, it is possible that some areas also face coastal winds that vary between 60 and 100 km/h. With this weather forecast, it is possible that there will also be electrical discharges, falling branches and trees and even power outages in some regions.

Weather forecast for the next few days

According to Inmet, until December 5, the whole country must prepare for rains. In most of the northern region of Brazil, the forecast is for rain above 20 mm. With the exception of eastern Amazonas, southern Pará and Tocantins and northern Roraima, where the amount of water must be greater than 80 mm.

The same should happen in the Northeast region, in the center-south of Bahia and also in Maranhão, Piauí and part of Tocantins. In Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba it will rain less, but these states can also suffer from showers throughout the week.

In the Midwest of Brazil there will be a greater amount of water in a large part of Mato Grosso, on the border with Goiás and in the Federal District. The accumulation can exceed 70 mm. Mato Grosso do Sul and the rest of Mato Grosso can suffer from rain showers due to an air mass. Other regions will have rain between 20 and 50mm.

The beginning of next week tends to be more tumultuous for the Southwest region. It can rain more than 50 mm per day. In some parts of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, the accumulation can reach 80 mm. In the west of São Paulo and the center-west of Minas, rainfall should be between 30 and 70mm per day.

The South region should be very alert. That's because the southwest of Rio Grande do Sul, east of Paraná and several areas of Santa Catarina must prepare for rainfall with more than 80 mm. In the other regions of these states, the accumulated is between 20 and 50 mm.
