Data indicate that 30% of the Brazilian population may have burnout syndrome

A burnout syndrome, also known as professional burnout syndrome, is considered an occupational disease by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, in Brazil, the numbers are alarming and show that approximately 30% of the economically active Brazilian population suffers from the disease.

The numbers refer to a 2019 survey by the International Stress Management Association (Isma-Brasil). This figure represents 1 out of 3 Brazilian workers. More worryingly, the data could be even higher after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burnout syndrome is classified as a disease by the WHO

In January 2022, WHO updated the version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) to add burnout as an occupational disorder resulting from chronic stress acquired in the work environment work.

The syndrome can affect people of any gender and age, regardless of profession. The result of burnout syndrome is emotional and physical exhaustion, with negative impacts on personal and professional life.

The development of the syndrome can happen in different ways: either through the work environment competitive, with many goals to achieve, degrading working conditions, low pay and moral harassment. The list, however, is long.

The search for unattainable productivity at work can result in the appearance of the disease. This is because it is common to find people who associate professional success with a large volume of activities and attributions at work.

In addition to the burnout syndrome, precarious working conditions, associated with wage insecurity, caused the phenomenon known as Great Resignation or the Great Renunciation, in which millions of workers resigned from their jobs.

In Brazil, data from the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan) indicate that up to 2.9 million workers resigned between January and May 2022.

The lack of prospects for professional growth, demands that are incompatible with paid wages and working hours Excessive workloads are also causes for the Great Renunciation and for the appearance of the first symptoms of the syndrome of burnout.
