Scientist explains what Earth would look like if humanity disappeared

Can you imagine what it would be like a world without humans? It's an intriguing idea that makes us question the impact we have on the planet, of that we have no doubt.

That's what Carlton Basmajian, a renowned professor of community planning and urban design at Iowa State University, in the United States, did. He managed to project what the state of planet Earth would be like one year after the extinction of the human species.

In this futuristic vision, the effects of human absence would be noticeable in all parts of the planet. Cities that were once home to millions of people, for example, would now be silent and empty.

Nature would begin to claim its space, gradually reclaiming urban areas and reintegrating them into their natural environment, etc. Check out these and other predictions in the next paragraphs of this text!

What would Earth be like without humans for a year?

Without human presence to release pollutants into the atmosphere, air quality would begin to recover. Nature would take over, purifying the air and allowing the natural beauty of the sky to reveal itself in all its glory.

Without human interference, the environment would also become more conducive to the development of wildlife and the flourishing of plants of various species.

Vegetation would spread through the streets, cracks would appear in the sidewalks due to lack of maintenance, and wild animals would freely explore these new territories.

Without human intervention, nature would take its natural course, bringing back a diversity of flora and fauna that had been affected by millennia of urbanization.

In marine environments, coral reefs would regenerate once harmful human activities such as overfishing and pollution would cease to exist. You oceanswould recover, providing a healthy habitat for many marine species.

Without human presence to hunt or destroy their habitats, the animals would have the opportunity to expand and explore areas that were previously occupied by human settlements.

Rodents, from mice to squirrels, which used to depend on human food scraps, would find new food sources in the wild and multiply rapidly.

In addition to all this, the lack of maintenance of structures built by man would be inevitable. Cracks in bridges, buildings, and highways would begin to form due to exposure to the weather and lack of repairs.

Without human action to carry out repairs and ensure the stability of structures, the deterioration process would be accelerated. And there would be no problem with that, as the vegetation would not be limited in growth.

Vegetation would find an opportunity to grow in these abandoned spaces. Seeds carried by the wind or animals could settle in the cracks and fissures of concrete structures, leading to the development of plantsand mosses.

Over time, the roots of these plants could cause additional damage, penetrating the cracks and accelerating the process of deterioration of buildings.

In the same way that it is possible to estimate the damage that human presence can cause, it is also possible to assume what nature would be like without human beings. Doesn't seem so bad, does it?
