Gen Z is choosing flip phones over modern smartphones – here's why

In the present stage of the so-called technological revolution, it is common to see the most diverse devices emerging, each one with more technology than its predecessor.

However, a rather “strange” trend is gaining the spotlight: a considerable portion of Generation Z consumers are preferring to buy flip model smartphones, introduced in the market decades ago, instead of the technological cell phones in bar format, with large and straight screens shiny.

What's behind this trend?

According to a group of journalists from the US broadcaster Fox News, responsible for raising these questions, there are some points that may explain why many people are buying simple flip cell phones instead of ultra smartphones technological.

Firstly, specialists point out that generation Z, the main one included in this data, stands out for having been present throughout the process of smartphone evolution.

Just for information, this generation is made up of people who were born between 1995 and 2010, which is exactly the same period in which the smartphone emerged and evolved from the old “flip phones” to the current screen smartphones touch screen.

With that, one of the reasons for the trend is the search for nostalgia and experience of the old times, which may be flooding the hearts of these consumers more specifically.

On the other hand, a certain aversion to social networks and the uninterrupted connection that modern smartphones make possible has grown in society.

Thus, having a flip phone, which is not so “crowded” with technologies, can be a way to disconnect without being incommunicado, even if it means taking pictures with less quality and not accessing the internet as easily.

Manufacturers got the message

As it couldn't be otherwise, the big brands in the smartphone market have understood what Generation Z wants and are already moving.

Companies like Samsung, Nokia and Motorola, known for having participated in all this history, both with flip phones in the past and with powerful smartphones in the present, have already started to launch new and modern flip phones.

In general, today's flip phones are visually beautiful, compact and sturdy devices.

They have sharp but small screens and batteries that last a long time, as well as giving access to basic functions with a lot of quality, like sending text messages, answering calls and even taking pictures and videos.

It is worth noting that some popular applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook also have compact versions to suit these smartphone models.

In contrast, today's main operating systems, Android and iOS, are also being adapted to fit this approach.

According to experts in technology consumption, this “retro revolution” proves that sometimes the simple is more attractive than the sophisticated.

Furthermore, it proves that even in the midst of the vigorous digitization of the world, in some cases it is healthier to “stop in time” and look back a little.
