1. avoid the fridge
Most people tend to store tomatoes in the refrigerator, but this practice can contribute to their rapid deterioration.
Too cold makes the tomato lose texture and flavor, making it less appetizing. If they are fully ripe, you can refrigerate them to slow down the ripening process.
2. Don't stack the tomatoes
Another important aspect is to avoid piling tomatoes. If you pile them on top of each other, the pressure can damage the delicate skin of the tomato, which can result in bruising and, as a result, a shorter shelf life.
3. Place the tomatoes stem-side down.
A technique widely used to prolong the shelf life of tomatoes is to store them with the stem facing down. The reason is simple: tomatoes receive most of their moisture through the stalk.
By storing it upside down, you prevent moisture from accumulating in the lower part, where the stem is, which prolongs its freshness.
4. Avoid washing them before use.
Another valuable tip is not to wash the tomato before storing it. Excess moisture can accelerate rotting. The ideal is to wash the tomato only when you are going to use it, to preserve its integrity for a longer time.
5. Choose less ripe tomatoes
Buy tomatoes that are not fully mature. They will continue to ripen at home and will have a longer shelf life than those already ripened at the time of purchase.
Look for tomatoes that are greener in color and let them ripen naturally in a cool, airy place.
