This edition had the participation of 18.1 million high school and elementary school students, with awards of 51,900 honorable mentions, 5,175 bronze, 1,725 silver and 575 gold medals. In addition to students, the award also goes to schools, Municipal Departments of Education and teachers, responsible for highlighting students.
In addition to the medals, awarded students can take part in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program. (PIC), which seeks to further encourage academic performance.
Students who choose to participate in the program are entitled to meetings, virtual or face-to-face, that can deepen their mathematical knowledge. Furthermore, public school students receive a grant of R$100 per month.
Those who were awarded and are enrolled in undergraduate courses can also be part of the selection of the Scientific Initiation and Masters Program (PICME), being who, if selected, will have the opportunity to carry out in-depth studies in mathematics along with graduation, regardless of the area, receiving a monthly scholarship of R$ 400.
This Olympics was created in 2005 by IMPA, using subsidies from the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). In this 17th edition, the age range of the competition was expanded, due to the creation of the Junior Olympiad – OBMEP, which is held with students from the 2nd to the 5th year of Elementary School.
With this recent expansion of age groups, the national competition became the first of its kind to include students from 6 years old. The objective of this measure is to change the perspective of students towards mathematics from the very first grades of education.
